DERMATOLOGY AND PET ALLERGIES

Skin problems are among the most frequent issues we see involving pets. Itchy skin is annoying to pets and can result in chewing, scratching, and unpleasant odors that can quickly become problematic for pet owners. Even though pets are typically covered by hair, their skin is still exposed to all kinds of allergens, bacteria, and other parasites that can become irritated and infected.

Routine exams help catch pet dermatology problems early. Our team will examine your puppy or kitten’s coat and skin to check for parasites, lumps, inflammation, and infection. If you notice signs of skin problems in your pets, bring them in for an evaluation before it becomes a larger problem.

We can also perform blood tests to determine the cause of environmental allergies.

SOME CAUSES OF DERMATOLOGY ISSUES IN PETS

Skin problems can be caused by a variety of environmental factors – a proper diagnosis is essential in identifying the problem and prescribing the proper treatment. Diagnostic steps commonly include microscopic examinations of material from the skin and ears, fungal and/or bacterial cultures, skin biopsies, and other allergy tests.

Potential causes of skin issues include:

  • Endocrine Disorders (these normally involve the over or underproduction of hormones)
  • Environmental Allergies (pollen, dust, mold, and plants)
  • Food Allergies
  • Infections
  • Parasites (fleas, ticks, lice, mites)

Some signs of dermatology problems:

  • Dry or Red Irritated Skin
  • Hair Loss or Matted Down Hair
  • Obsessive Chewing, Licking, or Rubbing
  • Sores, Discharge, or Discolorations
  • Unpleasant Odors
